Long Live King Charles III

Hello Ladies,

I hope that you all enjoyed the Coronation of King Charles III yesterday. I felt so sorry for the thousands of poor souls standing all day in the pouring rain, but it didn’t seem to detract from the remarkable pomp and pageantry that our country is famous for and manages so well. It was a truly historic spectacle.

As I watched the Coronation, I was also thinking about some of the significant events which have taken place since I took over as President from Caroline in December, ’21. There has been worldwide inflation; spread of the Omicron coronavirus variant; Russia invaded the Ukraine; record-breaking heatwaves; the Queen celebrated her Platinum Jubilee; we’ve had 3 different Prime Ministers; the Lionesses won the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022; there have been national strikes from railway workers, nurses, doctors, teachers and postal workers; the Queen passed away; the world population exceeded 8 billion (I think Mo may have had something to do with that. Ha ha!) and we’ve had the King’s Coronation. I’m hoping for a more settled second half of my Presidency - but I won’t hold my breath!

THANK YOU

· To Jackie for hosting Knit n Natter.

· To Barbara for organising the latest walk for the Walking Group.

· To Caroline for hosting the Bingo evening for the Moonlight Walk.

· To the Committee for another great planning meeting last Thursday.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

I’d like to wish a very Happy Birthday to Caroline (14th May), Kay (15th May), Val & Lynda (26th May) and Marie (27th May). I hope you each have a very special day.

GENERAL INFORMATION

The Dining Divas.

I sent out the following email and I’m anxious to have all the orders sorted as soon as possible. ‘Fino’ needs me to provide pre-order details at least a week beforehand. However, I shall be away from 23rd – 28th May. Could those of you who have already signed up, plus anyone else interested in coming along, please forward me your pre-order by 20th May? Full payment to Jackie in advance as usual, please.

“The next Dining Divas is on Wednesday, 31st May at Fino Restaurant & Bar, Flansham Lane, Felpham.

I’ve booked us in for the Early Evening Menu at 18.30. 2 courses £17.95, 3 courses £21.95. Please note that Fino adds 12.5% service charge for groups and if you would like to add side dishes, these are at an extra cost, as are all drinks. We also need to be careful because there is a £20 surcharge for ‘no shows’ on the night.

So, if you’d like to join us on 31st May, please

1) take a look at the menu and make your choices (below or on www.finofelpham.com )

2) add on any side dishes

3) tot up your total and add 12.5%

4) let me know your choices

5) let Jackie have your full payment

Sorry that it's a bit of a faff this time. Please let me know if you have any queries….

Many thanks,

Aileen

The Moonlight Walk.

The ARWI Moonlight Walk Team has been fundraising and has so far raised £297.10, of which £161.00 was raised at the Bingo night, organized and hosted by Caroline. Very well done ladies! You (and friends) will have the opportunity to join in a Coffee Morning on Friday, 2nd June, and a Cocktail Evening on Saturday, 10th June as well as other competitions and sales during our meeting. All proceeds will go to St Wilfrid’s Hospice.

Covid update.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared that Covid-19 is no longer a "global health emergency". This is, indeed, good news. However, this does not mean that Covid has gone away. Sharon reported that two weeks ago, St Richard’s Hospital had no cases of Covid. One week later, 29 cases were reported. Please be aware that the Covid virus is constantly mutating and if you feel unwell with flu-like symptoms, it would be wise to test for Covid. Please contact Sharon if you have any queries.

Blister Packs.

For the last 18 months or so, you have all supported our charity blister pack collection with such enthusiasm that Sharon and her Hub have been taking black sacksful to Superdrug each month. Sadly, Superdrug is no longer supporting this initiative and we’ve been unable to find another recycling source. So, thank you very much for all you’ve collected in the past, but we will no longer be collecting blister packs.

FUNNIES

FINALLY

I’m delighted with the ongoing success of our Sale Table in raising funds for our WI and the Moonlight Walk. Please keep bringing any items that you wish to sell. If you have any books that are gathering dust and you’d like to get rid of them, do bring them along. Any books which are unsold, I will continue to pass on to my friend Julia, who runs a “Dog-Eared Books” unit in Bosham Walk. She passes on her grateful thanks for all the books she’s received so far.

Have a good week everyone,

Aileen x
