Water, water everywhere...

Hello Ladies,

You don’t need me to comment on what an awful week we’ve had weather-wise. I hope that everyone has managed to stay safe and keep dry and that any damage or flooding has been kept to a minimum. If anyone is having difficulty of any kind, please do shout. Between us, we can solve most things. I must admit that I’ve been feeling a bit like I did during lockdown. There’s definitely a siege mentality going on. However, nothing lasts forever, and we must keep a sense of perspective: there are far worse things happening in the world. We will endeavour to support each other in a spirit of community, compassion and kindness.

THANK YOU

  • To Caroline for organising Cereal Killers last Saturday.

  • To Jackie for hosting Knit ‘n Natter last Wednesday.

  • To your Committee for a very productive meeting last Thursday and to Carol for hosting.

WELFARE UPDATE

I understand that Mo is recovering well following her long-awaited operation and we look forward to seeing her back at the monthly meetings very soon.

At least three ladies suffered with Covid following our meeting last month. One lady ending up in hospital twice. I’m so sorry that our meeting appeared to be the catalyst for this. If anyone wishes to wear masks during our meetings in the winter months, please feel free to do so. I hope that all are well on the way to full recovery now.

Sharon underwent surgery for gallstones last month and is slowly recovering. She’s having to relax and do nothing, which is a very tall order for her! We hope you get back to full health very soon Sharon.

GENERAL INFORMATION

NOVEMBER MEETING

As you all know, at the November meeting we will be having a wreath-making demonstration followed by the opportunity for us all to make our own wreaths. The Committee decided to use our funds to pay for all the materials for your wreaths and for this to be your WI Christmas present this year. In this way we hope that you will benefit from enjoying your wreath for the whole of December and beyond. Of course, if you have any bits ‘n bobs that you’d like to add to your wreath, start collecting now and bring them along to the meeting.

As this will be a very practical session, it will be a little less formal than usual with regard to refreshments.

Once Paul has given his demonstration, and we begin making our wreaths, the refreshments may be accessed throughout the rest of the evening. Refreshment donations will be gratefully accepted and given to the Parents and Carers Support Organisation (PACSO).

At the last couple of meetings, because ladies were waiting to be served at the bar prior to the start of the meeting, the speaker was being delayed from starting due to the chatter. In order that we can make a prompt start, could I please ask that in future, if you are still waiting to be served at the bar, could you be as quiet as possible and take your seats unobtrusively? This would be very much appreciated.

The Committee have decided not to hold a sale table for the November and December meetings but we will resume at the January meeting. Hold on to all those unwanted Christmas gifts which may be added to the sale table next year. We will hold a raffle as usual this month.

Please don’t forget to bring your wrapped Christmas presents to the November meeting, in support of My Sister’s House. As a group, you’ve all been most generous in the past so if you would like to donate a present, appropriately marked for the intended age group and sex of the recipient, that would be most kind.

A message from ‘Between the Covers’ book subgroup - they are unable to accept any more ladies for the evening group at present but anyone interested will be added to a waiting list. However, if there is enough interest for an afternoon group, we can arrange this.

Please let Sarah S know if you are interested.

FEDERATION NEWS

We received the following email from NFWI:

“Have your say about crime and anti-social behaviour in the area

Your local Community Safety Partnership is currently going out to consult with all residents to get their thoughts on how safe people feel in their local communities.

This online consultation, which runs until Friday, 3 November, is your opportunity to share your experiences of crime and anti-social behaviour in the local area and will take around 10 minutes to complete.

Your responses will allow the partnership to further improve its understanding of local communities and see whether the current priorities reflect the experiences of the residents living there.

To find out more, including what will happen with your responses and what the Community Safety Partnership do, visit https://yourvoice.westsussex.gov.uk/community-safety.”

I’m sure that late submissions will be accepted.

FUNNIES

FINALLY

Carol and I had a very productive meeting with Amanda and Kate last week, both of whom are ARWI members. These two ladies have started “Preloved and Pretty” events in the area and are organizing an event for us on Saturday, 9th March, 11.00am at Pagham Village Hall. This will raise money for St Wilfrid’s Hospice and Crimsham Farm as well as for our own WI. We will be serving refreshments throughout the day and I hope that you will contribute in any way that you can, be it by making cakes, helping to serve refreshments, buying a sale table in order to sell your pre-loved clothes, shoes and accessories, or helping to promote the event. There will be 23 sale tables available and ARWI members will have priority, with discounted booking (£22 instead of £25) until the end of November. Amanda will be giving further details at the November meeting but in the meantime, please save the date and take a look at the flyer below.

Have a good week everyone.

Aileen x

Payments for all ARWI events from now on will go through Jackie and the ARWI bank account “Aldwick Revival WI, Sort Code: 60-03-08, Acc. No. 74259172.” Please make a note of this for future reference
