What doesn't kill you makes you stronger

Hello Ladies,

I feel that I have to begin this Update by offering huge thanks to Kate, our speaker at the meeting last Thursday. As a member of our WI, I thought it was very brave of her to share such a deeply personal experience with us all: when I looked around I could see that everyone was enthralled and she certainly gave us all food for thought. She clearly put a lot of thought and effort into her talk and her delivery was spot on!

To me, Kate is not a ‘survivor’ or a ‘warrior’, she is Kate, one of our very supportive WI friends and an inspiration to us all. The same goes for all our other dear members who have had to endure the ravages of a cancer diagnosis.

We have offered Kate a Speaker's fee and she has asked that it be donated to her fundraising for St Barnabas House Hospice. She is taking part in the “Night To Remember Walk” on 13th July and it will boost her sponsorship to support the hospice that helped Bruce (Kate’s late husband) and it may well be somewhere that helps her, in time.

If anyone would like to donate individually, the direct link is: https://stbarnabashospice.enthuse.com/pf/kate-henwood

Kate has also written a book which she was too modest to promote on Thursday.

"What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Stronger" is available on Amazon and Kindle: https://amzn.to/2NQsDl1. She also run a Facebook page called ‘Kate Can Do This’ - https://www.facebook.com/KateCanDoThis.

I know that you will all join me in wishing Kate good health and all the very best in her ongoing secondary cancer journey.

THANKS TO:

  • To Lyndsay’s Hub for providing the refreshments for Thursday’s meeting.

  • Everyone who has donated items for us to use in the monthly raffle.

  • To Kate’s mum, Chris, who judged the Table Competition. There were some awesome contributions which made judging difficult!

  • To those of you who helped in any way at the meeting. Lots of little helpers makes the meeting run more smoothly.

GENERAL INFORMATION

A message from Gina: West Park Gala - Sunday 7 July 2024

With many thanks indeed to all the ladies who have signed up to help in any way at all at the above, I’m so glad the suggestion has received your support, and I’ll have updated information for you at the next meeting.  However, and for the ladies who were absent from Thursday’s meeting, we still do need volunteers to help out.

For instance, at the moment we don’t have any ladies who can make jam, and we really can’t put ourselves forward as the WI without any jam to offer!  We need JAM, JAM and more JAM, so can anyone make batches of jam for us please, which can of course be made well in advance? You are entitled to claim the cost of your ingredients, which must be listed on the label, from WI funds if you have kept your receipt.  And perhaps everyone could start collecting jars of any shapes and sizes to bring to the next meeting in June to help our jam (or marmalade) makers … they can always be recycled if we have a surplus, so many thanks to anyone who can answer this request.

Could you kindly email me (Gina) if you can make jam, or more cakes (on the grounds that there can never be enough cake). Your help is very much appreciated, thank you.

Fundraising Garden Party

On Saturday, 8th June at 1400, Carol has kindly offered to once again, open her lovely garden in order for us to enjoy afternoon tea and have a social get-together, whilst raising funds. The proceed of the funds will be split between our chosen charity and ARWI. Please help to support this event, either by providing a cake, tea bags, coffee, sugar, soft drinks and/or by bringing friends and family along and making a donation. If last time is anything to go by, this should be a wonderful event.

FUNNIES

FINALLY

You will notice that I’ve done quite a comprehensive Programme of Events below. This is because, I’m off on my travels again for a couple of weeks so I will be out of action from this evening and I won’t be doing another Update for a little while. Please take a look at the upcoming events and if possible, try to support them. I leave you all in the very capable hands of the Committee members who will post reminders on the Facebook site and please feel free to also post any events which you think may be of interest to our group.

Have a good couple of weeks everyone!
